CASA TIKIRI BOUTIQUE HOTEL HAS BEEN AWARDED A 2026 MICHELIN KEY IN SRI LANKA
It was Monday, September 22nd. Stefano and I were still in bed — which is not a habit we're proud of — already checking our phones.
I saw an email from the Michelin Guide. I read it once, then again, then asked Stefano to read it too. Casa Tikiri Boutique Hotel had been awarded a Michelin Key. We genuinely weren't sure if it was real.
It was.
WHAT IS A MICHELIN KEY AND WHY IT MATTERS FOR HOTELS IN SRI LANKA
Most people associate Michelin with restaurant stars. Since 2024, the Michelin Guide has also awarded Keys to hotels: the same inspectors, the same methodology, applied now to where you sleep and not just where you eat.
To be listed in the Michelin Guide at all, a hotel must meet five criteria: it opens a door to its destination, it demonstrates excellence in design and architecture, it delivers consistent service and comfort, it offers an experience worth its price, and it has genuine personality. More than 7,000 hotels worldwide have made that list.
The Michelin Key is a further distinction, awarded only to the best within that selection. One Key means: a true gem with personality. Service that always goes the extra mile, and a hotel that provides much more than others in its price range.
In Sri Lanka, 47 hotels are listed in the Michelin Guide. Only 12 have been awarded a Key. We are one of them.
A small detail we can't help but notice: Ahangama, a surf village on the south coast with one main road and a handful of hotels, now holds three of those 12 Keys. Something is happening here.
THE INSPECTOR WE'LL NEVER KNOW
Here's the part we can't stop thinking about.
Somewhere along the way, a Michelin inspector came to Casa Tikiri. They checked in as any other guest. They had breakfast, sat by the pool, maybe had dinner at our Italian restaurant on the south coast. They walked through the rooms, noticed the light through the breeze block walls, slept in the sheets we chose.
We have no idea who it was. That's exactly how Michelin works. The inspectors are anonymous, the visits unannounced. Every guest is treated the same way, which means the only way to perform well for a Michelin inspector is to never know they're coming.
We're curious. We're grateful. And we'll probably never find out.
WHY WE BUILT CASA TIKIRI
When Stefano and I left Lake Como to build something in Sri Lanka, we didn't have a business plan. We had a house that already had a name (Tikiri, written on a sign by the door, meaning small and graceful in Sinhala) and four pink bathrooms that had no business being as beautiful as they were.
We spent three years building around those bathrooms. Around the light. Around the rice fields and the sound of the ocean down the road. We commissioned new molds for a breeze block design that had nearly disappeared from Sri Lankan architecture, because it felt important to get it right. We argued about every detail. We cooked for guests before we had a chef. We learned, slowly, what Casa Tikiri actually was.
What Michelin recognised is exactly that: not a concept, but a place built from lived decisions. The kind that are invisible when they work.
If you want to know how it started, our story is here.
THE TEAM BEHIND IT
None of this is mine or Stefano's alone.
The team that runs Casa Tikiri every day, the people who prepare breakfast before anyone is awake, who remember how a guest takes their coffee, who make everything feel easy without anyone seeing the effort: they are the reason this recognition exists.
A Michelin Key is awarded to an address. But it belongs to the people who show up there every morning.
WHAT CHANGES
Nothing, really.
We still make the same pasta. The breeze blocks still filter the same afternoon light. Guests still arrive with questions and leave, usually, with something they didn't expect to find.
A Michelin Key doesn't change how we do things. It confirms that how we do things is worth continuing.
STAY AT A MICHELIN KEY HOTEL IN SRI LANKA
Casa Tikiri Boutique Hotel is located in Ahangama, on the south coast of Sri Lanka: seven rooms, a shared pool, adults only, 300 metres from Kabalana Beach. The property sits within jungle gardens and is designed around Sri Lankan vernacular architecture. Our Italian dinner restaurant is open every evening to hotel guests and walk-ins.
If this sounds like your kind of place, we'd be glad to have you.
We built Casa Tikiri to be a place people leave lighter than they arrived. That's still the only measure that matters to us.
See you in Ahangama.

A Michelin Star is awarded to restaurants for outstanding cooking. A Michelin Key is awarded to hotels for outstanding stays. Same inspectors, same independent methodology, two different worlds.
